Wonderful memories of climbing with really great mates over the years Number 17.

Wonderful memories of climbing with really great mates over the years Number 17.

Pete Chadwick (aka Little Pete / Young Pete).

Some time in 1982 a young, spotty faced teenager with massive feet started climbing at Pex Hill. He lived in the same northern industrial town as us (we'd just moved to Widnes) and he was a nice, polite kid. His parents were happy for him to go away to Wales climbing with us.

Talk about a baptism by fire. One of the first routes we did was "Psychic Threshold" on Castell y Gwynt. Apparently he was so terrified, whilst on the hanging belay under the roof, that he had to have a crap. How he managed to get his harness off, do the business, and belay at the same time, doesn't bear thinking about. Luckily I was completely unaware of what was going on below whilst battling my way up the headwall.

Soon after that the Porkies got their hands on him, and subjected him to all sorts of abuse. Poor kid's never been the same since!

Pete left the climbing scene for several years, due to other distractions. However he reappeared in the 90's and he seems to have been making up for those lost years, ticking hard boulder problems and sport climbs in Yorkshire. He's a great spotter and he tells hilarious stories (which we all have to pretend that we've never heard before). Haha.
